San Telmo (”St. Pedro González Telmo”) is one of the oldest barrios (neighborhoods) of Buenos Aires, and also one of the best preserved areas of that constantly changing Argentine metropolis, with a number of colonial houses and streets still paved with the original cobblestones. San Telmo’s many attractions include a number of old churches (e.g. San Pedro Telmo), museums, antique stores and a semi-permanent antiques fair (Feria de Antiguedades) in the bustling main public square, Plaza Dorrego. Recoleta is the upmarket, ‘old-money’ neighborhood of Buenos Aires, with many fabulous old mansions and wonderful, luxury hotels dotting the streets, in addition to upmarket cafes, restaurants and major label designer shops. Buenos Aires sees its first snow for 89 years

For the first time since 1918, a whole 89 years ago, it is snowing in the city of Buenos Aires.

Today, July 9th, is the official independence day of Argentina. But, people seem to be celebrating the rare occurrence of snow in the city a lot more. I guess that independence day happens every year, whereas snowfall in Buenos Aires literally is a once in a lifetime thing!

Back in 1918, the snowfall looked like this, creating an idyllic scene in Plaza de Mayo:

And of course, the kids here in BA are having the time of their lives…

Finally, this being the modern Argentina, we can even have the pleasure of watching it snow in Buenos Aires in an online video, thanks to YouTube:

Tanghetto is a Tango band from Buenos Aires, and one of the most important on the “new tango” scene - producing a mix of tango and electronic music.

Started in 2001 by producer and songwriter Max Masri and composer and instrumentalist Diego S. Velázquez, the band’s lineup includes bandoneon, violoncello, acoustic piano, acoustic guitar, electronic and acoustic drums, samplers, and synthesizers.

Their first album, Emigrante (electrotango) was released in 2003, nominated for a Latin Grammy award in 2004, and then went platinum in Argentina in 2006.

In addition to being well known for their expert balancing of electronic and ethnic sounds, I think Tanghetto’s music also features some great melodies and interesting song structures.

I recently found another great potential purchase in Tribunales,metres from leafy Plaza Lavalle, with it’s wonderful grand Palacio de Justicia building (the Argentine Law Courts), the world famous Teatro Colon Opera Theatre,and Line D of the Subway (which goes both to Palermo and Belgrano in one direction, and the City Center in the other).

This area is also very close to the heart of Buenos Aires City Center, but without being in among all of the hustle and bustle.
